Selenium is a trace element that is part of more than 200 hormones and enzymes of the body. The content of selenium in the body is about 14 mg. A powerful antioxidant, protects intracellular structures from the harmful effects of free oxygen radicals, which are formed as a result of metabolism and under the influence of external factors, including ionizing radiation. It is the main component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects the body from oxidative damage caused by lipid peroxidation. Free radicals destroy fatty acids that are part of cell membranes (lipid peroxidation). As a result, this leads to cell death.
